Rampant, accelerating technological advancement presents pressing questions for workforce leaders & employees alike: What does the future of the workforce look like? How do we prepare now to stay ahead?
This week’s piece explores six important future workforce trends to know and prioritize as they develop:
Trend #1: Skills Are the Currency of Work: a skills-based approach to personal and employee evaluation will become more mainstream. Teams and individuals alike should focus on upskilling and reskilling. Skill development will put employees and companies in the best position to take advantage of cutting edge tools and further technological advances.
Trend #2: AI Tools Are Everyday Teammates: AI tools are becoming increasingly common across various sectors, and will only become more present & relied upon. Workday research shows that 82% of organizations are using AI tools in some way. Humans will have to view themselves as collaborators and overseers of AI tools. These tools stand to help people avoid being bogged down in executing workflows but instead able manage and optimize them at a high level.
Trend #3: Employee Experience Is Paramount: Company leaders need to forget the era of Casual Fridays or office beanbag chairs. Today’s employees are looking for work models that truly support work-life balance, individualized growth and development, health and wellness, and meaningful opportunities to connect their work with their personal purpose and values. Employees satisfied with their company’s support for work-life balance are 2X more likely to be happy working for their employer and recommend working there to others.
Trend #4: Workforce Planning for an Uncertain World: The rapid pace of change has made traditional annual workforce plans outdated, pushing organizations toward continuous, strategic workforce planning. Leaders must anticipate scenarios—from AI adoption to supply chain shifts—and adjust staffing, skills, and costs in real time through shorter planning cycles. Few companies currently engage in this forward-looking workforce planning, leaving many struggling to keep up.
Trend #5: Managing Multigenerational Workforces: The workforce of the future will span more generations than ever before, from Baby Boomers to Gen Z and eventually Gen Alpha. The challenge for leaders is to create a system where diverse needs and preferences are supported. Cross-generational collaboration—through mentoring programs and mixed-age project teams— can enable two-way knowledge exchange where experienced workers share institutional wisdom and younger employees contribute digital skills and fresh insights.
Trend #6: Human-Centered Strategies Win: Research confirms that as AI becomes embedded in daily operations, distinctly human capabilities are becoming increasingly vital and irreplaceable. Developing competencies like interpersonal connection, strategic leadership, and moral judgment is essential for workforces to effectively collaborate with AI systems.
The future workforce is being shaped by the intersection of technology and humans. Moving forward, organizations that thrive will treat workforce management as dynamic while keeping human-centered strategies at their core.
