"Tips for Celebrating National Employee Wellness Month"

Hello , and welcome to Friday Coffee with MAP!

Study after study shows that employee wellness initiatives not only boost productivity and retention, but has a drastic effect on the holistic wellbeing of employees outside of the office as well. This weekend we’ll pass into June, which happens to be National Employee Wellness Month, so we thought we’d dive in on some practical, enjoyable strategies for celebrating. If you are an employer, we hope that this list provides some inspiration to make June an excellent month for your teams. If you are an employee, we encourage you to share this list or some of its ideas with your employer.

Happy reading and here’s to a wonderful– and healthy– June.

Employee wellness initiatives improve overall group health. They boost worker productivity and retention, increase collaboration, and help companies save money on healthcare costs. They also just make the workplace a warmer, more exciting place to be. Here are eight strategies to put into action during June’s National Employee Wellness Month, and beyond.

  • Encourage Walking Meetings: Walks have been shown to improve creative thinking, boost energy levels and lower blood pressure, and build interpersonal connection. Forego the stuffy meeting rooms and take brainstorming or strategy meetings on foot.

  • Encourage Rest Time: Encouraging employees to take scheduled mindfulness breaks, rests, or even brief naps can make a marked improvement in stress levels and productivity.

  • Encourage Fitness Breaks: Offer discounted gym memberships, and encourage employees to take a few minutes during the day to stretch, or provide on-site fitness classes. As we discussed in a recent newsletter, there are a number of fitness options available to us without leaving our desks!

  • Change the Menu: Organize food wellness programs to educate workers on healthy food choices– and if possible, provide them with healthy snacks and meals on select days.

  • Create a Challenge: Organizing races, walking challenges, or cycling events is a fun way to help employees stay active and build team spirit. Splitting participants into teams can increase engagement, collaboration, and motivation.

  • Promote Goal-Setting: Encourage your teams to set health and wellness goals for the month. These goals should be measurable and achievable: for instance, walking for 20 minutes every day. These goals can create health-based momentum that carries well past the month of June!

  • Signposts & Communication: Place well-positioned signs throughout the workplace to promote healthy choices—like reminders near elevators to take the stairs, or messages encouraging healthy eating.

  • Provide Health Information Regularly: Share health tips through your weekly newsletter, display them on the noticeboard, or invite experts to give talks on healthy living and positive behavior habits.

It is never the wrong time for an employer to reevaluate their employee health initiatives. A group with a passion for overall wellness and creation of a healthy work environment is a more effective group overall.
