"The Art of Reflection: How to Reflect on the Past Year for Growth"
Hello , and welcome to Friday Coffee with MAP!
In recent weeks, we’ve explored how using the month of December wisely can help set the stage for a strong start to the new year. This week, we focus on one especially powerful—and timely—component of that approach as the holidays draw near: reflection.
While looking back on the past year can be uncomfortable at times, this piece makes the case that intentional personal reflection is essential to building momentum, clarifying priorities, and identifying the most effective actions for the year ahead.
Happy reading!

Though January offers a fresh start, it is worth pausing during the month of December to reflect on the year behind us. Reflection helps clarify & quantify the year: what worked, what didn’t, and how we can best leverage the learnings of the last 12 months. Taking time to look back allows us to move into the new year with greater intention and purpose. Here are 6 key techniques for doing so:
Step 1: Create Space for Reflection: Set the foundation to prioritize reflection. Whether it is over coffee for a few minutes in the morning, or purposefully taking 10 minutes out of a busy work day, or thinking deeply during your commute– intentionally making the space in your day to reflect is the first step.
Step 2: Journaling for Clarity: Writing your reflections helps bring clarity to the processing of emotions. It allows us to identify patterns, recognize areas of progress, and pinpoint aspects that need attention. The physical act of writing also forces the mind to pause and engage more deeply with impressions and recollections.
Step 3: Meditative Reflection: A meditation practice can also be a productive way to meaningfully reflect. Less important than any tip for effective meditation is for you to go into the quiet, intentional space meditation provides to listen to your inner voice and get to the heart of key topics from the year gone by.
Step 4: Share a Year-in-Review: Find someone to share your reflections with, and be open to having someone share their reflections with you. This can not only provide a nourishing sense of community, but help spark productive conversations with others that drives shared learning and progress.
Step 5: Recognize Patterns and Set Intentions: As you reflect, look for patterns or themes that emerge. Are there particular tasks, relationships, or habits that continually provide you trouble? Understanding these allows you to move into the year ahead with insight and intention. They clarify goal setting: how will you work over the next 12 months to overcome the things that held you back over the previous 12 months?
Step 6: Embrace Growth Through Reflection: Reflection isn’t always easy, especially when it brings us face to face personal shortcomings or areas requiring improvement. But remember: those insights are often where growth begins. Honest, intentional reflection helps us draw lessons from challenges and move forward with greater wisdom and strength.
We hope you’re able to set aside time this month for meaningful, productive reflection—and that your 2026 is strengthened by a clearer understanding of how to improve upon the progress you built through your hard work in 2025.
